I’m starting to think these pieces come with stories already stitched into them… and I’m just the one lucky enough to uncover them.

This beautiful pink quilt followed me home from an estate sale in Chatham, Massachusetts. At first, I wasn’t sure what I would make from it. I only knew that I couldn’t stop thinking about the unusual combination of peach, pink and white, the delicate floral prints, and the incredible hand quilting.

As I began cutting into it, I hesitated. More than once.

The cotton batting inside was unlike anything made today — soft, lofty and resilient. Every stitch in the original quilt had been done by hand, by someone I’ll never know. And if you look closely, you can still see some of the faint pencil lines the original maker used to guide the quilting.

There is something humbling about taking apart hours — maybe years — of someone else’s work to give it a new life. But that is what happened here.

The quilt became two one-of-a-kind coats: a mother and daughter pair. This is the mother’s coat — finished with a soft micro-wale corduroy collar and wool lining, adding warmth and a little structure while keeping the soul of the original textile intact.

Two coats. One quilt. A story that gets to keep going.

A Note on Vintage Materials

All fabrics used in this piece are reclaimed or upcycled. As with any textile that has lived a previous life, subtle signs of age — gentle fading, soft fraying, or a quiet patina — may be present. These are not flaws; they are part of the fabric’s history and an intentional element of the design. They add character, authenticity, and charm that no new cloth can replicate.
